Theory of Mind Autism: Social Cognition in Autistic Children
Theory of mind refers to the ability to recognize that other people have their own thoughts, beliefs, and intentions that may differ from our own, and for many autistic children, developing this skill can be a significant challenge. When theory of mind is difficult, everyday social interactions such as reading facial expressions, understanding jokes, or predicting how a peer might react can feel confusing and hard to navigate. With consistent support through strategies like social stories, role-play, and video modeling, autistic children can gradually strengthen these skills and participate more confidently in social situations at home, school, and beyond.
