Kinds of Autism: Understanding Levels, Types, and What They Mean
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, socialization, and behavior. Historically, autism was divided into specific subtypes like Asperger’s Syndrome and Classic Autism, but in 2013, the DSM-5 consolidated these into a single diagnosis: Autism Spectrum Disorder. ASD is now assessed based on support needs and severity, ranging from Level 1 (requiring support) to Level 3 (requiring very substantial support). Understanding these levels helps guide personalized interventions like ABA therapy, which address each individual’s unique needs and strengths.
